About posting mp3s

Some people have asked me to post mp3s to my blog, but since these artists are poor and getting ripped off so much anyway, I don’t feel too comfortable supporting this trend without the permission of the artists.

However there are some great mixes and podcasts available totally free in the internet. And in the future I promise you’ll hear more of my mixes too.

And down on the other post are most of the main players provided, so just put Limewire (or whatever peer-to-peer network your using) singing and search by the artist names if you need to get the mp3s.

But anyway this issue is something I'd like to hear some of your opinions too! The main purpose of this blog is to spread the music and information about Rio Baile Funk and I know providing people with the music is vital for it to spread. But is there enough music available or should I post some lo-fi mp3s? Please leave some comments to have some conversation about it!

off course all are getting ripped off but since there is not much Baile Funk available and not everybody has the money for a trip to brazil it would be nice for some people...

I know a brazil family that travelled there over the winter holidays and asked them to buy some CDs for me. Now I do own 7 funk cds plus the original Favela Bootie Beats Vol 1/2. I do suggest other people do the same...

PS: great bloque, interesting and more interviews and information ist really welcome ;-)

Well, it could be cool if there's some music on the blog. It is a music blog anyway.

This goes off topic:
Saw that they have Baile Funk at Pori Jazz next autumn! Nice one. You pulled that off?

I think you can post Streaming Music in real audio format so that people cannot just download and not pay for anything. Provide a link to somewhere where they can buy the tune too?
This way, they can listen to the tunes but if they want it, they have to go buy it...

Thanks for the comments!

I'd really like people to participate more on this whole blog to get opinions and share ideas. There aren't that many people yet into baile funk so we need to support eachother to build a scene for the thing in Europe and elsewhere outside Brazil. How did Marx put it: "All the baile funk diggers, unite!"

Cherry's idea is good. My mac just doesn't like real audio...

But I'll post something without the downloading option. I'm just now completing soon a bigger mix of my baile funk and kuduro favourites, so that'll be online for downloading soonish as a first aid.

I've also been thinking of doing a podcast for the blog. Some half an hour or hour of music and interview stuff every month or something. What do you guys think about that? Would that serve the need for music?

off topic: Yeah, Mr. Catra is doing 4 gigs in Pori Jazz festival (Finland) I'll be djing there some baile funk, but it wasn't me who organized the thing...

Thanks for Tchiky of the live mix, exellent songs!

The mix is almost ready, and I've got also other good news conserning this issue.

I was asked to do a show/playlist on baile funk every second week to a new webradio/music community called Fairtilizer, so there'll be hopefully a lot of baile funk available for streaming in the future. But I'll tell mote about that after the site has opened.

There was just a long discussion about posting mp3s (or rather, giving away your music for free) on the internet on the Brazilian Music Producers group.

There was only one person who really didn't think it was a good idea - who had been in an 80's Brazilian rock band and actually made money from selling records. The rest of us were all for giving away our music. Even if it meant going to Uruguiana market and finding a pirate version being sold (THAT YOU DON"T GET PAID FOR!).

The vast majority of baile funk tracks never even make it to Mercado uruguiana....let alone be sold legitimately. And, the artists (with VERY few exceptions) have already sorted out payment (or lack thereof).

So, why hold back? How is NOT putting mp3s ont he internet going to help an artist that no one has ever heard of in anyway at all? I say put the tracks up. BUT, with the very important distinction that they receive credit! Name spelled right, etc. The music is made to be heard, so let's listen to it and share it.

BTW, nice blog. That's great that you translated Sany's interview. He is most definitely one of the grande mestres do funk. I think it's important that people who don't speak portuguese, have never been to rio and aren't familiar with funk culture understand the context and significance of the music they are out shaking their asses to. nice one.

Thanks for Maga Bo for the comment.
I know painfully well the money distribuition problem that brazil has, specially with the baile funk scene. The labels paying 50 reais per song and you never hear from any copyrights again...

But still, as some of the best artists are little by little starting to gain fame outside Brazil and releasing stuff in the US or Japan I feel that it's not apprropriate to post music without license. For example Sany's and Sandrinho's new EP's are available also legally and I don't want to eat their bread by putting those songs out pirated...

Anyhow there are good points on givin the music away. And in the futere I'll start to ask licenses directly from the artists and then showcase some material from them on the blog.

Also this Fairtilizer project is going to be reality in a month or two and then you'll have every second week a playlist of the hottest new baile funk, selected by me, for your listening pleasure. And I'll also put a player on the blog, so that it'll be possible to listen while reading... So just wait a bit and enjoy the Ghetto 808 mix and what you find on the two sites, Funk Neurótico and DJ's Club.
Cheers, Timo

It doesn't matter either way... you have already posted much information and links to satisfy.

808 1 and 2 are great downloads and the podcast links. I am going to get off my ass and go get an I-tunes card later today so I can purchase The "Baile Funk Masters E.P." 1 and 2.

Let me know if I-tunes Is not so good to buy music from... I don't know what kind of deal the artist's get from I-tunes ... If they get a deal at all...

I have been getting into making music much more this past year and I'm planning on releasing tracks for free just to get heard. But many of you all have been doing this for some time and deserve recognition and some scrilla($)

keep up the good work. And MUCH thanks for those Dj links I have been looking everywhere for acapellas, loops, anything I can my hands on... Please post any more links you might have that would help......

o watcho.....

I would recomend that the baile funk scene would start to adopt the use Creative Commons licences. That would make this situation clearer.

About the licencing, piratism, Creative Commons (and Techno Brega from Pará, Brazil): check out this great free documentary:

It's really nice to hear this blog is helping people. So thanks for all my readers!

This "Good Copy Bad Copy" documentary is exellent! I definately recommend it to everyone who's interested on music and copyright issues! Creative Commons is also great, but unfortunately I don't think there are any real ways of implanting this in the favelas of Rio at the moment. The business structure is so crooked there...

This fairtilizer player I introduced offers one good way for you guys to hear new music. I hope you enjoy it!

I'll try to investigate where to buy tracks legally on internet through digital download. If you know good sites, please let me know. Specially for the stuff that isn't published outsid Brazil.
